The one category with real rules attached

Most junk is junk. Appliances are different, because several of them are regulated, and the regulations are the reason your county will not simply take them away.

Anything containing a sealed refrigeration system — refrigerators, freezers, wine fridges, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers — holds refrigerant. Under the federal Clean Air Act, that refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped or crushed. It is not a formality; venting it is genuinely illegal, and it is why a fridge left at a Fairfax County kerb will sit there for weeks and then earn you a notice.

We route those units to a recovery facility. It costs us something, it is built into the price you are quoted, and it is not a line item that appears afterwards.

Getting it out of the house is the other half

A full-size refrigerator is around 250 to 300 pounds and top-heavy. A water heater that has been in service for a decade is heavier than it looks, because there is sediment in the bottom of it. Neither of these is a thing to walk down a flight of stairs while gripping the sides.

Appliance dollies with stair-climbing tracks exist precisely for this, and a two-person crew with straps can take a washer down a basement stairwell in a controlled way that one determined homeowner cannot. This is the part where doing it yourself goes wrong most expensively — not damage to the appliance, which is leaving anyway, but damage to a stair tread, a banister spindle or a person.

Where we stop and a licensed trade starts

Being direct about the boundary. We disconnect water lines, unplug standard cords, and pull 240V dryer plugs. We do not touch gas.

If your range, dryer or water heater is on a gas line, Virginia requires a licensed plumber or gas fitter to disconnect and cap it. Plenty of removal crews will do it anyway. We will not, because an improperly capped gas line is a category of mistake with no acceptable failure mode. Have it capped, then call us — we will often come the same day, and the appliance is out within the hour.

What happens to the metal

An old washer is mostly steel with a motor in it. A water heater is a steel tank. A range is steel and cast iron. All of that has scrap value and a straightforward recycling path, so appliances rarely go to landfill as whole units.

Compressors and motors come out for copper recovery, steel bodies go to a scrap yard, and only the genuinely non-recoverable fraction — insulation foam, some plastics, glass shelving — reaches general waste. It is one of the more genuinely circular corners of this business, and it is worth knowing that when you are deciding whether the extra effort of proper disposal is worth it.
