Furniture is the hardest easy job there is

A sofa weighs less than a refrigerator and it is far more difficult to move. The weight is spread out, the shape fights every doorway, and the moment you tilt it in a stairwell you discover the geometry does not work. This is the category where people most often try it themselves, hurt their back, and call us anyway on the following Tuesday.

The physical trick is almost never strength. It is knowing which pieces come apart. Nearly all modern upholstered furniture is designed to be assembled in the room, which means it is designed to be disassembled in the room too — sofa legs thread off, sectional pieces unclip, recliner backs lift free of the frame, bed rails release from the headboard. A sectional that seems permanently trapped in a Reston basement usually leaves in four separate pieces without touching a wall.

Protecting the house matters more than protecting the furniture

The furniture is leaving. The house is not. So the protection goes on the parts staying behind: runners down the hallway and stair treads, padding on the door frames and newel posts, and a second person spotting corners on any turn we cannot see around.

This sounds obvious. It is also the thing that most often does not happen when a general-labour crew turns up, and drywall repair at a corner bead costs more than the removal did.

Mattresses have their own rules

Mattresses are their own category, legally and practically. Kerbside collection across Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington will not take them, and most transfer stations charge a separate per-unit fee. They also compress badly in a truck, so a single mattress takes up more room than its weight suggests.

We bag mattresses in the room before carrying them, which is not squeamishness — it stops dust and anything living in the seams from being distributed down your hallway on the way out.

What actually gets donated

Being straight about this, because plenty of companies are not. Donation partners have real standards, and they turn away far more furniture than people expect. Upholstered items need to be clean, dry, odour-free and structurally sound. A frame that flexes, a cushion with a stain, or anything that has spent a winter in a damp basement will be refused at the door.

Solid wood furniture is much easier to place, and dressers, tables and bookcases find second homes regularly. When something qualifies we route it, and when it does not, we say so on site instead of implying otherwise.
