Where county pickup stops working

Every county here runs some form of yard waste collection, and for routine seasonal volume it is fine. You are already paying for it. Use it.

The limits are where it falls apart. Bundles have to be under a certain length and weight, there is a cap on bags or bundles per collection, everything has to reach the kerb, and it runs on a fixed weekly schedule. Which means a hedge row you tore out on Saturday becomes a six-week project of dragging bundles to the street, while the pile sits in your side yard killing the grass underneath it.

Storm work

Northern Virginia gets summer thunderstorms that drop limbs across a whole neighbourhood in twenty minutes, and the occasional winter ice event that does considerably worse. The pattern afterwards is always the same: everyone calls at once, and every hauling company in the region is suddenly booked for four days.

We prioritise the jobs that are actually urgent — a limb across a driveway, debris blocking a walkway, anything creating a genuine access or safety problem. Everything else gets a realistic slot. We would rather tell you Thursday and arrive Thursday than promise same-day to everyone who calls and disappoint most of them, which is what tends to happen after a big storm.

Debris that is simply ugly rather than dangerous usually moves faster than people fear, because the emergency queue clears within a day or two.

Landscaping tear-outs

The other half of this work is not weather, it is renovation. Someone is replacing the front beds, pulling out overgrown foundation shrubs that have been there since the house was built, or tearing out railroad-tie retaining walls that have finally rotted through.

These jobs generate a surprising amount of material and a lot of it is heavy — old mulch is dense once it has absorbed a season of rain, sod is mostly soil, and gravel is worse. We quote soil, sod and gravel by weight rather than volume for the same reason we do with construction material, and we tell you which category your pile falls into before we load it.

Where clean green waste goes

Brush, limbs and leaves that are genuinely clean — no plastic, no bagged trash mixed in, no treated lumber — go to composting and mulch facilities rather than to landfill. Northern Virginia has decent infrastructure for this, and clean green waste is one of the easier things to divert.

The word doing the work in that sentence is clean. A brush pile with three bags of household garbage in the middle of it is no longer green waste, it is mixed waste, and it costs more to dispose of. If you have both, keep them in separate piles and we will handle each correctly.

The one thing we will not do

We do not take down standing trees. Not a small one, not one that looks easy.

Tree felling is licensed, insured, specialist work, and the failure modes involve roofs, power lines and people. If your job starts with a tree that is still upright, hire an arborist. We will take every bit of what they leave behind, often the same day they finish, and that is a genuinely useful division of labour.
